Deliverability Journal – Mar 28th, 2023

Fabrício Yutaka Fujikawa, March 28, 2023March 28, 2023

Yesterday I had to answer a question on SORBS:

Why do we get listed on SORBS, and what must we do to get delisted?

SORBS Listing/Delisting Overview and Delisting Procedure

  1. SORBS (Spam and Open Relay Blocking System) is a system used to prevent spam by identifying and listing IP addresses associated with spamming or other abusive behavior. The system has various databases, including those for spam, open relays, open proxies, and more.
  2. SORBS Listing/Delisting Overview:
    • SORBS identifies and lists the IP addresses of servers that are sending spam or are involved in other abusive activities. This helps mail servers filter out unwanted messages from these addresses.
    • When an IP address is listed, other mail servers may temporarily or permanently block it.
    • The SORBS list is regularly updated, and IP addresses may be added or removed based on their activities.
  3. SORBS Delisting Procedure:
    • If an IP address has been listed in error or the issue has been resolved, the administrator can request to delist it from the SORBS database.
    • Delisting can be requested via the SORBS website, and the procedure includes providing information about the IP address and the reason for requesting delisting.
    • Before requesting delisting, ensuring the listing has been resolved is essential. This may include fixing the mail server’s configuration, removing spamming accounts, or patching security vulnerabilities.
    • After the request is submitted, SORBS staff will review it and may contact the requester for additional information.
    • If the request is approved, the IP address will be removed from the SORBS database, and other mail servers will no longer block messages from it.
    • Delisting is not guaranteed, and SORBS may reject the request if the issue has not been resolved or if there is insufficient evidence of the problem’s resolution.

In conclusion, SORBS is a valuable tool for preventing spam and other abusive activities by listing IP addresses associated with such behavior. However, in cases where IP addresses have been recorded in error or resolved the issue, administrators can follow the delisting procedure to remove their IPs from the SORBS database.

I also answered the following questions during the day

Why do I keep getting these emails when I constantly unsubscribe?

The reason could be poor list management practices by the sender or a delay in processing your unsubscribe request. To deal with these unwanted emails, you can create a filter to automatically delete them or report them as spam if you suspect malicious intent.

How can you find out which email marketing service someone uses?

To determine the email marketing service someone uses, subscribe to their newsletter and examine the headers of the original raw message you receive. Look for clues in the DKIM, SPF settings, and message ID, which can indicate the email marketing service.

If you want to discover an email service provider, follow these steps with MXToolbox:

  1. Enter the domain name.
  2. Click on the “MX Lookup” button.
  3. Review the results to identify the email service provider.

Hi, Today, I bring you a case of a re-permissioning campaign. We implemented a re-permission campaign, and the results were spectacular,…
