Google Notification: User suspended for spamming

Fabrício Yutaka Fujikawa, April 8, 2023May 6, 2023

This is an interesting case in which an email account participating in a (legitimate) cold email marketing campaign was suspended by Google.

We received a notification email from Google titled “User suspended for spamming.“

(Since January of this year, we have been receiving sporadic suspensions from Google.)

This happens when many Google users click on the “Report SPAM” button after receiving our messages. It isn’t easy to know precisely how many users and what the root cause is, so in these situations, hypotheses are raised, acted upon, and monitored to see if the desired effect is achieved.

It all started when I received this email from the client:

Guessing that this is because it was suspended by Google.

Let me know if you think there was a breakdown with the automation for marking as do not email, if we need to think about changing the sequence a little bit, or something else.

I’m sure you do, but if we look at any of the recent emails from this morning or yesterday, would that give us some idea of what went wrong?

So I responded to him:

Hello _________,

I did a detailed analysis of the messages sent by the blocked account on the eve of the block.

The many messages from the campaign _____, step 6, caught my attention the most.

I compared it with the other accounts, and two of them also had a high volume of sending steps 5 and 7 of the same campaign (but not step 6.)

So I thought that step 6 could be the root cause of the suspension, but I analyzed the last suspensions we received from Google and saw that step 6 was sent the day before in one of the cases, but in 3 of them, it was other messages. Inconclusive.

Anyway, I reviewed the message of step 6 and thought it could give a sense of self-promotion, leading people to consider it spam.

Therefore, I created a new variation and sent it for your review. The subject is “_______”

In addition, comparing the account suspended by Google with another account with a well-formatted email signature with images, I got the impression that the image version conveys more professionalism in an email thread:

I formatted all accounts with formatted signatures.

Let’s monitor.

Please, let me know what you think about the new message of step 6?

Thank you very much!

Kind regards,

The expected outcome is for the account to return to regular operation.
