Email Deliverability Journal – May 27th

Fabrício Yutaka Fujikawa, May 27, 2023June 25, 2023

Hello,

Today, I’m going to share a case from a partner, a copywriter, whose client asked him if it would be worth buying an email list. Here’s the email he sent me:

Subject: Buying Email Lists?

Hey, Fabrício,

I have a potential client who owns a restaurant. His email list has 2500 active subscribers.

He is considering buying a list of 20,000 emails from a local art and wine festival. From what he told me, it seems that all these people have opted to receive updates and maybe be contacted by other companies.

Either way, a confirmation of interest process would be necessary. But I still believe that, with my emails and a good discount, he could get around 30% confirmation of interest.

Do you think it’s a good idea for him to buy the list? Is it possible to prevent him from ending up in spam lists? Or do you have a “no buying lists” policy?

_______

My response to him was:

“Hello _______,

Given the scenario, I believe it’s a good idea for him to buy the list if — and only if — the target audience is the same.

From a copywriting perspective, you should mention the business partner in the email footer to establish the connection between their list and your email. You can include a statement like: ‘You are receiving this email because you authorized our partner [Partner’s Name] to share your information with us.’ It would also be good to mention the local art and wine festival.

Even better, you can include it right at the beginning of the message, if you prefer.

Additionally, provide an easy way for them to unsubscribe. You can add in the same sentence something like: ‘If you are not interested, please unsubscribe.’

The goal is to not be marked as spam.

It would also be good to mention your client’s privacy policy, including a link in the footer (or in the same sentence). This helps reassure recipients about how their information will be handled and demonstrates your commitment to protecting their data.

Best regards,
Fabrício”
